Gorton Vert Milling Machine The Home Machinist!

2003-7-1  Personally, I wouldn’t categorically classify all Gorton’s as ‘lightweights’ or ‘hobby machines’. The stripped down 8D weighed 1500#. My 1943 8-1/2D w/ power X-Y weighs 2500#. A similarly outfitted 9J which I’ve seen in the flesh weighs a substantial 3400#.

Gorton Master Mill any experiance ? The Home Machinist!

2009-4-21  The older Gortons, 8D, 8 1/2D and 9J's had Gorton collets or B&S 9 mostly. Some from that series will have a head that will tilt and nod as this must have been optional. The ones with this feature that I have seen appear to have a different ram. There is a Gorton web-site that is pretty good, just do a google search and it should come up.

George Gorton Machine Serial Numbers

2015-4-21  1-22 Master Mill, 1977 At some point, K&T changed their serial numbering to be: dddd-tt Where tt was a multiple of 10 (00, 10, 20, 90). The HMC-60 (presumably Horizontal Machining Center) series seems to be the only product line affected by this.

2013-10-15  I just won the bidding for this Gorton 8-1/2D vertical mill. It'll complement my Gorton 9J very nicely. The wisdom of two vertical mills for a one man home shop is debatable but I just couldn't pass up a relatively local Gorton for the price I paid.
